Head lice are a common problem in schools. Some schools request that parents report head lice to the school as soon as possible, so they can distribute notices advising other parents to check their children.
However, this is not the policy of every school. The problem of head lice is ongoing throughout the school year and therefore some schools do not see a point in continual reminders to parents. Their view is that it is up to the parents to check their children regularly.
Even though there are still ‘School Nurses’ in schools, it is no longer part of their role to check for and treat head lice. However, school nurses can offer advice to parents and can offer support to those who ask. They can help to identify an infestation if you are unsure and need confirmation as well as recommend treatments.
Schools can help to play an important part in eradicating the social stigma of head lice by talking to the children, and giving them a better understanding of head lice and where they come from. Also, by offering support to parents as well as helpful advise on how to treat them, especially to new parents with younger children.
