How to Detect Head Lice

Parents can help to prevent the spread of head lice by checking regularly for lice. The best way to do this is by wet combing:

  • Wash the hair as normal and towel dry
  • Apply a conditioner to the whole length of the hair
  • Brush through with a normal brush to remove knots
  • Comb hair with a fine tooth comb from root to tip, wipe comb after each stroke to remove any caught lice/eggs
  • Comb onto white tissue or paper as this can make seeing any present lice easier

It is quite common to mistake flakes of dandruff and dirt for nits, but nits are stuck to the hair shaft and can be very difficult to remove.

The easiest way to tackle wet combing is by parting the hair into sections, starting at the top of the scalp and working your way down, as lice can be difficult to find. They move away from a disturbed area to hide from probing hands.
