Head lice cannot jump or fly they can only walk from one infected person to another through close contact. Although anyone can catch head lice, it is most commonly spread between children, as they tend to work and play with their heads close together. It can also be spread from children to adults, especially in the same family, as they are more likely to have head to head contact, eg, through cuddling, playing etc.
Contrary to urban myths, the occurrences of head lice infestations are nothing to do with bad hygiene, social status or income. Everyone has an equal chance of catching head lice if they come into contact with another infected person.
